Jean Cras

(1879-1932)

Jean Cras

Jean Cras was a French composer and naval officer, born in Brest. His naval career began at age 17, where he traveled to various parts of the world. He was known for technical innovations like the “Cras ruler,” widely used in navigation. During World War I, Cras served with distinction, earning recognition for bravery. He rose to the rank of Rear Admiral and died in 1932 while holding the position of Major General of the Port of Brest.

Cras’s musical career ran parallel to his naval duties. A close friend of composer Henri Duparc, he continued composing throughout his life, with his chamber music and opera Polyphème being most notable. His String Trio (1927) is considered a standout work, blending diverse influences from North African and Breton music into a refined chamber music form.
