Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975)

DoelenKwartet Performs Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 10 (October 2000)

In October 2000, on the initiative of the Vereniging Vrienden van het Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, we recorded our first CD, featuring Russian string quartets, including Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 10 in A‑flat major, Op. 118.

Composed in July 1964 and dedicated to Mieczysław Weinberg, this quartet is a profound work lasting around 22 minutes, made up of four movements: the pensive Andante, the fiery Allegretto furioso, a grave Adagio structured as a passacaglia, and a reflective finale.

Personally, I recall feeling shaky the week before the recording session, thinking of postponing the project but we pressed on, and despite everything, the result was a beautiful recording! Today, I’m proud to share that milestone with you via a link to the full recording on my Drive.

  1. Andante
  2. Scherzo furioso
  3. Adagio
  4. Allegretto
