Bohuslav Martinu

(1890 – 1959)

Bohuslav Martinu

Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) was a Czech composer known for his prolific output, which includes six symphonies, 15 operas, 14 ballets, and numerous orchestral, chamber, and vocal works. He briefly studied under Josef Suk and became a violinist in the Czech Philharmonic. After moving to Paris in 1923, Martinů shifted away from Romanticism and began experimenting with modern French styles and jazz influences. His String Trio No. 1 (1923), written in Paris, exemplifies his early neoclassical exploration.

Throughout his career, Martinů incorporated Czech folk elements, particularly in works like The Opening of the Springs. His time in the United States, starting in 1941, saw him compose six symphonies, all performed by major orchestras. He later returned to Europe and died in Switzerland in 1959.
